This book has a few aspects which are "dated", mainly due to technology which would not work anyway after an EMP - this did not detract from a very authentic post -(sort of) - apocalyptic saga. I found it gripping, and appreciated the detail and research that went into it. The two authors gave different viewpoints on the story, which added a lot. Actually, I bought my original copy in the 1980's, I think, and it finally wore out. I was fortunate to find someone selling their copy, since it would appear to be out of print.

"...no plan of operations extends with any certainty beyond the first contact with the main hostile force..." (Helmut von Moltke the Elder) could be an epigraph on the first page of Warday. The premise in October 1988, the Soviets launch a surprise nuclear attack on the U.S., but, as would've come as no surprise to General von Moltke, nothing goes according to plan. The command-and-control systems of both sides prove much, much less survivable than expected in the face of massive EMP bursts--and, as a result, only the first volley of nukes hit their targets. Years after Warday, the U.S. is still only beginning to recover and two intrepid reporters set off on a perilous journey to piece together what happened and how people are managing to survive the radiation and virus racked existence of the new world.

This book is very readable. It's divided into relatively short chapters and alternates between the perspectives of the two authors (who have inserted their real selves into the story, as far as I can tell). The story is told documentary style and is all the more engrossing for it's realism. Streiber and Kunetka explore in fascinating detail the unforeseen consequences of a host of calamities the collapse of the world's largest economy (literally in an instant), no more electricity or computers, millions "dosed" with lethal amounts of radiation, new and deadly viral plague, the new geopolitical order in the absence of U.S. and Soviet dominance and the breakup of America into several smaller countries. The only non-realistic thing about the book is the absence of any nuclear winter climate changes. But, nevertheless, as the two interview survivors across the country, hearing their recollections of where they were on Warday, it will eerily evoke your own experiences answering the same question about 9/11 or (for older readers) the Kenneday assassination. This book is highly recommend for anyone interested in nuclear war or post-apocalyptic fiction or who just loves a good thrill.Oh, and it served as the inspiration for the cult hit TV show "Jericho," if you ever watched that.
I read this book in the 1980's, during the cold war, just about the time it first came out. I could not put it down. I have read it several times since, and need a new copy. This book stays with you, haunts, terrifies. The described nuclear exchange was both much less worse than we'd ever feared, as well as much more awful. Perhaps the power of the book was the realism, the thought that this could happen at any moment, and no one can fully prepare. The ending was quiet and peaceful, much like Alas, Babylon, but still a haunting reminder that the world we live in is a fragile house of cards. Even more chilling is the fact that we came terrifyingly close several times to an accidental nuclear exchange that would not have turned out as well. I don't know what the impact would be on a reader who did not live through those times, who doesn't remember the 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s. But for those of us alive in any of those decades, the impact of this story and the implications of such an event will never leave us. We pray this will never happen but will always live under this shadow...at least until the next horrible weapon comes along.
Really enjoying it. Any book by Whitley Strieber has to be worth the reading, and this one was no exception.
This was a sometimes harrowing journey of a post Soviet-US nuclear exchange, involving a comparative small number of thermonuclear weapons. Author Whitley Strieber and his co-author did great research, wrote clearly and with humanity and, in fact, I've read this book several times. Odd sidebar Years later I heard Strieber a few times on Art Bell's wacky overnight radio show. Strieber claimed aliens had implanted some device behind one of his ears that surgeons couldn't remove because it would move away from their scalpels. What happened to this talented author's mind I'll never know.
I really enjoyed this book. I picked up a used copy here on . Passable condition, hey , I knew I was getting used, and good ship time with reasonable rate.

I'm a big fan of this book. It was gritty and felt very real. Very believable. I would consider this the most believable book on the topic I've read. I highly recommend this book. I couldn't put it down.
I first read this over 30 years ago and still remember most of the content from then. I have not had the opportunity to re-read this again, but I am thrilled to have this book back into my personal library.
Even though somewhat outdated, the book is still a fascinating fictional look at a possible outcome from a fairly limited nuclear exchange between the US and USSR. Kudos also to the seller for having delivered above and beyond the call of duty.
