Assimilation will wet the appetite of the fans that have developed a fascination with the plight of the Greenland Viking settlers in the first two novels of the series, The Settlers and Confrontation. The twists and turns of this continuing tale will engage the reader from the outset as the tall, fair-skinned invaders, knowing it is their key to survival, gradually assimilate with the savage natives of the pre-historical land that will become the Hudson Bay and Great Lakes regions of Canada and the US. In a scenario ordained by the gods, this assimilation process has a thin chance of success through the forced involvement of two of the Viking settlers with tribes of natives that are habitual enemies of one another. Against overwhelming odds that can have but one successful outcome for the settlers, daily life becomes a balancing act where one word, one gesture, one innocent mistake, can spell disaster in this hostile setting.

I am a friend of the author. Since he was born he was compelled to write this trilogy describing an ill fated journey from Greenland to Canada by the Nordic Vikings to settle in the new world. The settlement was in a land ideally fitted to the Vikings; however it was heavily populated by three nomadic Indian tribes.

The story is about the assimilation of the Vikings into the society of nomads and the fate of the Vikings. The novel was thoroughly researched and the findings leave no doubt to the reader that the historically accurate tales about blond headed barriers were members of the Indian tribe.

Jerry stuck with accuracy as it relates to the Indian tribal names and the Nordics that settled in the new world. It took a while to adjust to the names and nomenclature, however this quickly makes the reader a party to the natives and Vikings who lived and died in this adventure. Jerry is an excellent descriptive writer who verbally takes the reader through the many adventures that occurred during this adventure.

I had a tough time laying the novels down, then I spent a great deal of time reflecting on the potential real I type of this adventure and it's reality to history. An excellent trilogy.

Assimilation An Axe of Iron Novel Volume 3 J A Hunsinger 9780988945524 Books Reviews

‭‘‬Assimilation‭ ‬‭ ‬An Axe of Iron Novel‭' ‬is J.A.‭ ‬Hunsinger's third and final novel in his‭ ‘‬Axe of Iron‭’ ‬novel series about the Norse people and their adventures as settlers in the new world.‭ ‬The Viking tale takes place about‭ ‬1000‭ ‬years ago in the settlement of Halfdansfjord and surrounding areas,‭ ‬located along the coast of North America on the east coast of James Bay,‭ ‬at the south end of Hudson Bay.

Hunsinger continues with the adventures of Norsemen explorers Halfdan Ingolfsson and Gudbjartur Einarsson,‭ ‬and their families,‭ ‬as well as the native tribes the Naskapi‭ (‬Cree‭)‬,‭ ‬Anishinabeg‭ (‬Ojibwa‭)‬,‭ ‬and the Haudenosaunee‭ (‬Iroquois‭)‬.‭ ‬As historical fiction,‭ ‘‬Assimilation‭’ ‬presents a possible scenario about what may happened to the Norse people and their settlements during this period.

‘Assimilation‭’ ‬delivers a more in-depth story of the native tribes and their impact on the Norse people and their settlements.‭ ‬Readers experience the conflicts,‭ ‬relationships,‭ ‬and integration of the settlers and the native peoples.‭ ‬Gudbjartur,‭ ‬once a prisoner of the Naskapi tribe,‭ ‬has forged an important friendship with them while living among them and adhering to their customs and practices.‭ ‬He goes by the name of Nipishish,‭ ‬meaning Axeman.‭ ‬Halfdan is the Chieftain of the Norse settlement,‭ ‬Halfdansfjord,‭ ‬where he is tasked with overseeing life at the settlement and trying to thwart an impending threat to the settlers and the settlement itself.

Friendships develop between settlers and Naskapi and some of the native tribes‭ ‬fully‭ ‬accept the Norse‭ ‬people.‭ ‬There is an integration of the Norse people with these tribes,‭ ‬particularly settlers like‭ ‬Gudbjartur and Ingerd’s son,‭ ‬Ivar Gudbjartarsson,‭ ‬who chose to stay with his adopted Haudenosaunee‭ ‬parents rather than return to his own Norse people.‭ ‬Readers experience native life,‭ ‬including their customs,‭ ‬rituals,‭ ‬practices,‭ ‬hunting methods,‭ ‬cooking methods,‭ ‬battle tactics,‭ ‬and how the Norse living among them adapted.

Along with forged friendships with the Naskapi and changing and adapting to new circumstances,‭ ‬the major conflict in the story which presents a possible scenario about what may have happened to the Norse people,‭ ‬is the Anishinabeg tribe’s declaration of War with the settlers and their determination to destroy Halfdansfjord.‭

Hunsinger‭ ‬presents an adventure rich in historical detail,‭ ‬with careful attention paid to customs and practices of both the Norse settlers and the Native tribes.‭ ‬The struggles and threats to the Norse people highlight the difficulties of maintaining‭ ‬a‭ ‬settlement.‭ ‬The impact of loss is a major theme as well as obsessive,‭ ‬brutal revenge that destroys one’s humanity as the result of a traumatic loss.‭ ‬Hunsinger delivers a tale filled with action and adventure giving readers a fascinating look at life of the Norse and native tribes about‭ ‬1000‭ ‬years ago.‭ ‘‬Assimilation‭ ‬An Axe of Iron Novel‭' ‬is well worth reading,‭ ‬particularly for those who love historical fiction.

I love this series!! It is researched well and I like the character development.
After reading The Settlers and Confrontation, I never really left the families of these books, neither the Native Americans nor the Norse. I often thought of them and what else might have happened to them. With the third book, Assimilation, these questions have been answered. The postulations were thoroughly researched and are entirely plausible. It made for a great story that was always interesting and very personal. I am happy to recommend it for the story as well as for the historical detail of the North American culture. It is a great read and a real page-turner!
I have read all three novels of The Axe of Iron The Settlers, Confrontation, and Assimilation. I am in constant awe of the skills of this author. I consider these three books among the best novels I have ever read. The skill, passion and knowledge that Mr. Hunsinger writes with in this historical fiction is fantastic! I could hardly put them down. Each book carries with it love, anger, passion, fierce fighting and romance, and it never seems to stop. Hunsinger cost me a lot of lost sleep reading into the wee hours of the night. I hope he treats us with many more exciting novels like these.
